Shop Just In

No locusts, but pure blue skies and unparalleled celestial showmanship rewarded anyone lucky enough to be in Vermont on Monday. A little warm sun was all it took for the wood frogs and peepers to start their spring chorus, an insistent reminder that garden planning should be well under way. If you need some inspiration, we have plenty of that: High Mowing seeds, healthy snacks, hearty meals and handy shortcuts all right this way….

Dahlias

Spring is finally in the air, and dahlia tubers from Old Friends Farm are here to help celebrate. Plant them in the next few weeks and you can expect glorious explosions of color in summer. Diva and Black Beauty feature dark, velvety blooms, Flip Flop brings the pink and who can resist the show put on by Bridezilla? Of course, if you’re going out to dig in the dirt, don’t forget to plant some seeds, too. Whether veggies, saladherbs, or a little something for the pollinators, it’s time to get filling those beds.

Side Hill Farm

The Naylor family has been making jam at Side Hill Farm since the 70s, using just fruit and sugar, no funny business. We have jars of strawberry or gingered rhubarb jams, as well as marmalade and lemon curd, any of which would be perfect smeared on toast, scooped into yogurt, or baked up into a tray of jammy oat bars. If you crave novelty in the morning, we have adorable sets of 6 mini jars in a “jamples” box. Or, whip up a batch of apple sauce pancakes and top them with some gooey maple blueberry drizzle for a weekend breakfast to remember.

Green Mountain Peanut Butter

We couldn’t offer new jams without their ideal complement, could we? Green Mountain Peanut Butter is a woman-run company committed to creating fresh, all-natural peanut butter that is 100% made in the USA, from the peanuts to the packaging. We have crunchy, honey roasted and Vermont maple and cinnamon in stock — don’t forget the bread!

RISE UP BAKERY

Because of the size of their oven, and baking schedule, only customers who receive deliveries later in the week are able to enjoy Rise Up's incredible rye a sourdough breads. We are very excited to have their focaccias and cinnamon rolls available now, so that everyone has a chance to enjoy their incredible skill.

Rise Up Bakery makes handcrafted sourdough breads using long cold fermentation and bakes them in a century old wood fired oven. They use a rye and wheat starter that originates from the Carpathian Mountains of Western Ukraine. This starter comes from high elevation and is a combination of cold spring water, flour and air filled with yeast from the local conifer trees which makes it unique. Creation of a loaf takes 48 hours from inception; flavor, digestibility and shelf life are refelected in the final product.

Owners Jim and Larissa Haas recently won a statewide award from the Vermont Historical Society for their work in bringing back to life the Union Cooperative Bakery, now their own Rise Up Bakery. This tiny old brick building was built in 1913, and was an important wood fired bakery for Barre, its labor movement, and local communities from 1913 to early 1940s.
